Get ready for Spring! Stock up on Bluebird Houses NOW at Fairbury Fastener & Supply.
The area Bluebird Project is drawing lots of bluebirds to our area. To keep them here, we must create a habitat that will keep them coming back. Covering our area with bluebird houses will help this cause.
It is known that more often than not, if you put out a bluebird house, the first to occupy the house will be a tree swallow. Tree swallows are also beautiful birds with striking blue on their backs. However, these little birds are more aggressive than the Eastern bluebird and so will generally “win” and occupy the house.
Another known fact is that tree swallows do not want to neighbor another tree swallow. So, a little trick to increasing your chance of getting a bluebird is to set up a second house 100 feet from the first. Since a bluebird doesn’t mind neighboring a tree swallow, the second house is more than likely to get a bluebird.
Also, come early March, in order to increase the possibility of getting a bluebird, once you have setup the houses, you should check them on a regular basis. Bluebirds build beautiful, clean, neat grass nests. If you see sticks or trash or heavy grass in the box, dump it out. Wrens, sparrows, and other birds may be trying to build a nest. If you see small pieces of grass, don’t dump it! It may be that a bluebird has been out scouting!
