FAIRBURY, IL – For the Kids – Christmas Shopping Program and Gift Selection – there is an annual event sponsored by the Fairbury Women’s Club and the Westview PTO that is structured to give your kids an experience in shopping for Christmas gifts that they can be responsible for finding on their own. This opportunity, appropriately entitled “Kids Christmas Corner”, is going to be open for business at the old Weber Plumbing building (Fairbury’s Main Street – 206 E Locust) on Saturday, December 5th, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm and it is available for kids 12 and under.
These young gift seekers will have the chance to browse through an assortment of possibles and see if they can find a gift for their parents and/or grandparents (no kids gifts) and, if they find one, they can purchase it for $1. The program is designed to give the youngsters a nice sense of participation in the holiday spirit, a chance to feel responsible, and the gratification of accomplishment while having fun doing it at a cost that is easily affordable. You parents need to know that your children will be doing this on their own, you won’t be allowed to accompany them (there will be plenty of adult supervision inside the shopping area) – they have to do this without parental distraction so Mom and Dad will have to wait outside the perimeter while your protege’s accomplish this unique feat of thoughtful procurement by their own volition. The Women’s Club and PTO volunteers will be the guides and advisers for this adventure in Christmas giving and once the gifts are selected they will take care of the wrapping function so that you parents won’t be able to see what they got you and, the rules prohibit the adults from shaking, peeking, or coercing the giver into revealing the presents contents – pretty stiff penalties too!
However, you Mom’s and Dad’s can do a little preparation before sending them in on this covert action – help your child prepare a list of the folks he or she wants to procure gifts for and that will help the volunteers direct the shopping traffic to the appropriate items. Help them with their list and bring them up to the excitement – its a pretty nifty idea and past experiences have produced some pretty happy kids so, make it happen for yours.
A couple of footnotes – you adults can pass the time while you wait for the kids to “do their thing” by doing some shopping of your own at the Westview PTO “Cookie Jar” which will be right there in the same area – may find some things yourself and those proceeds would be going for a very good cause.
Also, if you have some free time and would like to help these Ladies out they can always use some extra hands on the volunteer front – give Carol a call at 815-692-2910 and she can fill you in on the details. By the way, this is the day of the Fairbury Christmas Parade so there’s a lot going on – go ahead, be a part of it!
