The Slagel Family Farm Tour & Dinner Event for July – these, now infamous, Chef Prepared Dinners that follow a tour of the facilities at the Slagel Family Farm in Fairbury attract fans from both far and near. It’s a Saturday afternoon that offers the informative expertise of LouisJohn Slagel, aka “the farmer”, and his guided tour that includes a snack to start with, a “walk about” that introduces the guests to baby piglets, playful goats and lambs, and gives them the opportunity to actually gather some fresh eggs. Physical contact with the animals is encouraged and all questions will have access to LouisJohn’s knowing answers. Following the farm tour most of these events include a demonstration of how certain meat portions are turned into the retail cuts you will find at your grocery stores – this is done in their butcher shop by a guest butcher with beef, hog, or lamb carcasses that are already prepared for the process. On the premises is a new barn that is not used for standard “farm fare” – it is actually their dining and meeting facility and, it is where the guests go upon arrival for their snack and, where they return to when the tour and demo is completed. Slagel Farms provides meat products for many of the finest restaurants in the Chicago Land Area, in addition to their retail outlets, and the four course dinner that you are now in store for will be prepared by professional chefs from these restaurants. For the dinner tour on Saturday, July 16th, the featured chefs will be Matt Troost from the Three Aces/Charlatan Restaurant and Mike Galen from Bedford/Bucks – both are “high end” Chicago restaurants and very popular.
Here are the high points of the July 16th event:
