Dinner Prepared by Professional Chicago Chefs – The Slagel Family Farm has a well established program that provides an opportunity for guests to experience a quality four course dinner prepared by professional chefs from acclaimed Chicago area restaurants. The dinner is actually the conclusion to a full afternoon that involves a tour of the Farm’s facilities and allows the visitors to see first hand how all of this works, how much of the food that we consume is developed and cared for, and, in short, how the farming operation functions in making it all happen. The Slagel Family Farm is in its sixth generation of operation and it is rich in tradition as well as modern innovation and the tours help those taking them re-connect to the land and all the livestock that is so essential to completing the food chain successfully. The tours are conducted by family members and are not only informative but also gives the participants a chance to interact with the farm animals – gather some eggs, hold a baby piglet, walk amongst some playful baby lambs and goats and, ask any questions you might have. Along the way there will also be a meat cutting demo at their butcher shop (just cutting, no slaughter) which will show you how the various cuts that you find in the stores are prepared. The event starts at 2:30 in the afternoon with a prepared snack for the arriving guests, then the butchering demo, the walk through the livestock areas that includes “playtime” for the young-un’s, human and animal, and then comes the “Grand Finale” – Dinner!
The first Tour/Dinner Event of the 2015 season is Saturday, May 23rd and here is what they’ve got on the agenda for this one:
The Slagel Family Farm supplies meat to a number of Chicago Land Restaurants and these Dinner Tours feature one or two of the prominent Chefs from this theater of high powered dining facilities. These Professionals will be preparing the meal that you are going to enjoy.
The May 23rd Dinner will be using the services of Guest Chef Erling Wu-Bower of the Nico Osteria Restaurant and Guest Chef Brian Huston of the Boltwood Evanston Restaurant – they will prepare and serve the scheduled dinner.
The dining hall is a new barn right there on the property all rigged up and decked out to make your meal comfortable in every way. The dinner will be comprised of products produced right there on the farm, literally mere feet from where you will be sitting down to eat it.
