Recently, someone who had attended a meeting of community leaders from area small towns at the Forrest Library in December emailed us some nice things about our area! Below are pieces of what they wrote! We are excited to hear what others think of our small towns.
“Sometimes we take day trips to see new towns. Last week we went to Forrest and Fairbury. This was based on seeing the Forrest Library at that meeting, and seeing your brochures that I picked up in Cabery.
“We were delighted with Forrest. We drove around looking at the nice houses and were impressed looking at Hampsher House and the depot museum, even though both were closed. Such a nice town.
“We really were impressed with Fairbury. This is now one of my favorite towns. We had lunch at Lost in Time. The food was great, and I was happy to see an old bank building re-purposed this way. We walked all over the downtown, bought an item at the antique store, and even bought groceries at Dave’s. The only thing I had heard about Fairbury was the unique Dominy Library, and I wanted to see it…
“I was really impressed seeing the Beach house, and the large mansion on the corner of Rt 24 and the street that goes to the library, I think it is Third. I don’t think I have seen a small town with so many beautiful houses.
“I found Dominy was having a used book sale, so I returned 2 days later with a trunk full of books for them. I also donated 2 books I wrote about Cardiff, a lost coal town in Livingston County.
“Perhaps you should add Cardiff to your (Livingston County) brochure. There are a few houses and one business there now. It has a marker from the Illinois State Historical Society, telling the Cardiff story, plus a plaza of carved granite blocks from donors who are descendants of former miner families. It is worth seeing… Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how much I like Fairbury. Have a nice day.”
“Hearing that folks from outside our area are delighted and impressed with our small towns makes me feel so good,” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shop group.
“Keep up the good work! We have so much to be proud of here!” concludes Bobbi.
