Two Events Coming Up in Fairbury

Take notice of a couple of upcoming events! On Friday, March 9th, the VFW is hosting their monthly Fish Fry. Held the 2nd Friday of every month from 4:30-7pm, everybody is encouraged to attend and enjoy the great meal.

Soon, the Special Shops will be hosting their Spring Open Houses! Mark your calendars for Friday/Saturday – March 16 and 17! Don’t miss this event!

Back to the VFW & the VFW Auxiliary – a national organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is devoted to the veterans who have traveled long distances to fight and maintain peace for our country. They help their families, preserve our nation’s patriotic foundations, and educate our youth about what a veteran is and what a veteran will always be.

The local VFW chapter #9789 at 205 E Locust St in Fairbury has plenty of events throughout the year that spur interest in the community and always manage to help veterans and their families.

The VFW holds meetings on the 2nd Monday of the month and the VFW Auxiliary on the 2nd Tuesday of the month – both at 6 pm. These meetings are where future events are planned and discussed. In April, they will be electing new officers for the new term and in May the new officers will be installed.

The VFW hosts many events at their location in Fairbury. Periodically, it has been hosting a Biscuits, Gravy & Eggs breakfasts (cost by donation). This breakfast is usually held on the Community Sale day, but it may be a regular event in the future.

Fairbury Fair week is a very active week for the VFW. The organization holds a membership drive under the grandstands with information on membership and much more. Their biggest fundraiser is helping out in the ticket booth at the Fair. The VFW Post also has bingo at the fair all week.

In August the VFW sponsors the local blood drive. In spring they have a Salad Luncheon, and in the fall they have a Soup and Sandwich night. The VFW usually has an entry in the Christmas parade.

The VFW also takes items to VA Hospitals and visits with their fellow service men, and they go to great lengths to help homeless veterans.

The VFW is currently accepting new members. For questions regarding Auxiliary membership please call Cindy Endres, Treasurer of the VFW Auxiliary at (815) 419-7165. For VFW Post membership questions, please call Paul Augsburger at the VFW (815) 692-4210.

“It is great having an active chapter of the VFW and VFW Auxiliary in our community,” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shops Group. “Supporting their events is for a good cause. Go enjoy their great food!”
