A few years ago when the Specialty Shops group created the Fairbury brochure, the goal was for the shops to cross promote each other and raise awareness inside and outside of Fairbury what all our small community has to offer residents and visitors.
At a Fairbury Improvement Group meeting, there was discussion about growing the community in terms of new residents, and the consensus seemed to be that we didn’t really want our growth to explode. Instead, we want to grow organically – people moving here who like our community and enjoy small town living.
Over time, the brochures were distributed far and wide – to all the Illinois State Welcome centers, to many hotels, attractions, and areas across our State. People started coming to town, often with their brochures in hand. Facebook posts started springing up – saying, “I found a Fairbury brochure HERE!”
It is fun to see and hear where all people find our little brochure about Fairbury – at Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota, at the Korean War Museum in Springfield, at Patti’s Settlement in Grand Rivers, Kentucky, Rise & Roll Bakery in Middlebury, IN, and the list goes on and on…
Then just recently, we heard the best story of all. Someone just recently moved to Fairbury, and a friend of hers asked her, “What brought you to live in Fairbury?”
This new resident responded, “Well, we saw this brochure, and we thought this sounds like a nice little town!”
“What a great story!” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shops Group.
“This kind of thing is exactly what we were hoping would happen. Realizing it will all take time, we know that more residents living here means more economic potential for everyone,” continues Bobbi.
“We probably haven’t heard every story, but hearing this, we have hopes that the ultimate goal of our distribution is starting to realize itself! Together, we should all keep up the good work – making Fairbury a wonderful place to live!” she concludes.
