The Blade – Speedway’s Big Weekend Benefits Whole Town

The Prairie Dirt Classic and UMP Summer Nationals are both coming to Fairbury this weekend – July 25th and 26th! Thousands of people will be coming to the area and the local economy benefits.  These fans will need the services of area restaurants, food stores, gas stations and shops. In the end, money spent locally helps keep the area alive and well.

For those who follow the stock car dirt track racing programs, you’ll remember on Saturday, June 21st, the UMP Summer Nationals circuit had an event scheduled here at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway. It had a $10,000 purse for the winner and the competition on that circuit has a lot of top talent from the sport following the money trail. Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not kind to the area on that date and that particular high caliber race was postponed. Well, it’s back, and it’s back with a vengeance!

If you fans can handle the action, and this is a doozy, you’re going to get a week-end of unforgettable excitement because the Summer Nationals race is going to run in tandem with the Prairie Dirt Classic which is the event buster of the season with its $25,000 purse. For dirt track ovals, this is the Granddaddy of two nights of non-stop chills and thrills with the big names joining the local heroes of the sport.

“While fans are here, there are other events going on, too. The local specialty shops are holding a Race to Fairbury event on Friday and Saturday,” says Bobbi McKeon owner of Heart’s Desire.   Each shop has something unique to offer. The Spotted Owl, Serendipity, Once ‘n Again/Frugality, Meyer’s Gifts and Services, Lost in Time/Lost Arts, Kilgus Farmstead, Heart’s Desire, Dave’s Supermarket, Country Cupboard, and Antiques & Uniques are participating in this event!
