Recently, Fairbury was named as one of the best day trips from Chicago on the www.timeout.com website! Actually, our city was listed #2 of thirteen! Hurrah! We are proud to be listed among Amish Country, IN, Lake Geneva,WI, Holland, MI, Michigan City, IN, Milwaukee, WI, and others!
This is quite an honor as “Time Out” is an international company with a 45 year history of enthusiasm for spreading news about what is happening in cities around the globe. The website says, “Time Out has grown into a leading international multi-channel media company which spans 89 cities in 38 countries and provides the very best inspiration, information and booking opportunities for the arts, entertainment, culture, food and drink, and shopping.”
Kilgus Farmstead and Slagel Family Farm are what prompted “Time Out’s” designation of Fairbury to be one of the best day trips from Chicago. They mention that for a drive of only one hour and 50 minutes by car, folks can visit the farms whose names are popping up over and over again in the menu sourcing notes of famous Chicago restaurants.
The web page encourages an hour-long tour of Kilgus Farmstead ($4; see kilgusfarmstead.com for availability) to get acquainted with the farm’s sweet Jersey cows, learn the ins and outs of milking, and sample their delicious soft serve freshly made at the farm. It also suggests to, “Bring a cooler and hit the on-site store for Kilgus dairy and meat as well as goods like eggs and honey from nearby producers.”
It also mentions that Slagel has teamed up with widely-known Chicago chefs to put on a program of farm dinners through the fall (see slagelfamilyfarm.com for details). There is an interactive tour of the farm and a butchering demo at Slagel Family Meats in Forrest, after which you’ll retreat to their picturesque barn for the main event, a wonderfully delicious, family-style meal prepared by the guest chef, using many products raised on Slagel’s farm.
“We are thankful for this kind of exposure online, and appreciate the local farmers’ hard work and diligent efforts to make people – far and wide – aware of what our community can offer. Being named one of the best day trips from Chicago is simply awesome!” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire Antiques and Accents.
“The Specialty Shops, our restaurants, and other businesses benefit from this type of PR. Many thanks to all of those who work hard on a daily basis to promote our community!” says Bobbi.
