This weekend will probably be one of the biggest weekends of this summer! The Fairbury American Legion Speedway is hosting the UMP Summer Nationals on Saturday, June 20th. This annual event attracts big crowds for the $10,000 win, and the restaurants and the retail shops will benefit.
Events like the UMP Summer Nationals bring people from all over the state (and even out of state) to our small town. We have a lot to be proud of and it is important to let these visitors know what all we have to offer.
To complement this big weekend, the Specialty Shops of Fairbury are hosting a Sizzling Summer event on Friday, June 19th and Saturday, June 20th. Stop by the shops for some “sizzling” sales! Those shops participating The Spotted Owl, Serendipity Cards & Gifts, Once ‘n Again/Frugality, Nature’s Designs, Meyer’s Gifts & Services, Lost in Time/Lost Arts, Kilgus Farmstead Country Store, Heart’s Desire Antiques & Accents, Dave’s Supermarket, Country Cupboard, & Antiques & Uniques. Visit each of these shops to see what’s unique and interesting.
The restaurants in town are invaluable to our tourism efforts. McDonald’s Family Restaurant, Benchwarmers, China Kitchen, Dairy Queen, Lost in Time, and Dave’s 3rd Street Deli all support this effort from a monetary standpoint. Great dining choices are huge for our community. Besides being important to people from this area, it is critical in serving folks from outside, especially during the tourist season and when there are big events in town. Many thanks to all our restaurants for their hard work and support.
Lost in Time’s annual RD’s Drive In event is on Friday, June 19th. This event brings back great memories for those who remember the original RD’s Drive. “I worked for Ted & Ruth Doran at RD’s for many years and they inspired my love for the restaurant industry. This day is a tribute to them and RD’s Drive In,” says Sally Goembel, owner of Lost in Time.
Their menu of the day reflects the menu of RD’s with Cheeseburgers and Hamburgers, Hotdogs, Double Cheeseburgers, Superburgers, Pizzaburgers, French Fries, Onion rings, Mushrooms, Tenderloins, Chicken Sandwich, Coleslaw, homemade Potato Salad, Rootbeer Floats, 7up Freezes, Orange Freezes, Banana Shakes (and others!), Dipped Cones, Sprinkle Cones, Pies, etc. There will be outside seating and some former RD’s waitresses and cooks come to help out. Don’t miss this fun event!
First State Bank of Forrest is holding their Customer Appreciation event on Friday as well. Stop by for refreshments in the bank lobbies!
On Sunday, June 21st, McDonald’s Family Restaurant is holding their annual Duct Tape Tie Event for Father’s Day. “All fathers will receive a free roll of duct tape to keep when they dine at McDonalds on Father’s Day,” says Sue McDonald, owner of McDonald’s Family Restaurant.
“We have a tie contest for those that want to enter & the winner will receive a free gift card. We will take pictures of all the entries and post on our NEW web page, mcdonaldsfamilyrestaurant.com. It’s a lot of fun! We will be serving our brunch downstairs again,” Sue says.
Finally, on Sunday, Indian Creek Country Club will be hosting their “Parent-Child Golf Tournament.” Tee times are available all day and this event is open to the public.
“We love having BIG WEEKENDS in Fairbury,” says Bobbi. “Thanks to everyone for their hard work and support for these events.”
