It is always fun to hear stories from shop owners about new people in town, and why they are here and how they heard about Fairbury.
Just lately, five ladies from Bourbonnais came in Meyers Gifts and Services. They were browsing the store and were interested in one of the shop’s unique items, Gripstics.
“Gripstics come in four sizes and are used to keep your snacks fresh. All you need to do is fold the snack bag and put on the Gripstics!” explains Roberta Meyer, owner of Meyer’s Gifts. “These ladies bought a total of forty-three of them!” It is great when Fairbury becomes a resource for specialty items like these, especially when the customer wants to receive ongoing notices of special events and the shops’ Christmas openhouse. It is also a reminder to SHOP LOCAL as our shops may likely have just what we need!
Recently, a couple was shopping at Antiques & Uniques. The store owner Diane Pawlowski asked if they were familiar with the other stores in Fairbury. They responded that they had picked up a brochure at a Casey’s in Herscher, Illinois about a year ago and finally had time to make the trip.
According to Pawlowski, “It’s nice to know that the Fairbury brochures make such a long-lasting impression on people who find them in their own towns”. The couple explores a lot of small towns and remarked positively on Fairbury’s downtown business district and the nice older homes here. Pawlowski directed them to drive by the Beach House on Hickory Street which is on the National Historic Register.
Another afternoon a couple stopped by Meyer’s Gifts and Services. They mentioned they were from Bloomington, and asked if the owner, Roberta Meyer remembered them. Two months prior, they had met Roberta while shopping at Farm and Fleet for cutlery.
“I mentioned that I had the best cutlery they could buy and invited them to my store. Yesterday while they were having lunch they decided to come to Fairbury. They didn’t know the name of the store so they picked Meyer’s Gifts & Service, and they hit the jackpot. They bought quite a few knives, and they have told their friends. Before leaving, I invited them to stop at the other shops in town! They said they will be back.”
“Just recently, Bill Flick mentioned in his Q & A in the Pantagraph that the Chicago Tribune cited Fairbury as one of the, “13 Best Day Trips from Chicago!” Says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shops group. “We have so many neat things in Fairbury… between all the shops, the variety of restaurants, the farms, the history and historical buildings, the museum, the library, the race track, the golf course… we are proud to call this our home.”
