A recent article on Central Illinois Proud’s website highlighted the importance of shopping local. There are several good reasons to shop local. One primary financial reason is the tax dollars going back in the community from expenditures made at local shops.
“Your tax dollars locally go so much further. They support your law enforcement, your fire department, city services, and the people who fill pot holes and come out to help.” said Gretchen Pearsall, Director of Strategic Communications with Peoria County.
In recent years, online shopping and big name stores have come to dominate national sales. From a national perspective, the local stores have been left in the dust, and some are now on the brink of extinction. However, local business owners can vouch that it shouldn’t have to be this way. There are many people who don’t realize that buying local actually helps keep tax dollars in the community you live.
The taxes being reinvested into the community is one reason why some towns thrive, and while other towns are struggling to stay afloat.
“Our community of Fairbury is blessed with many small unique shops,” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire Antiques & Accents and coordinator of the Specialty Shops group.
“Although there are some items which are not available in Fairbury, between all of our shops, we offer the majority of what many folks need. Plus, in addition to the benefits of tax dollars being reinvested locally, you also can’t beat the customer service you get at local stores as opposed to online shopping where you are interacting with a screen and not a real person,” concludes Bobbi.
Next time you think about shopping outside of our local area, check out the local shops first. You may be surprised at the availability, the competitiveness, and the ease of shopping local. It will have a great impact on our small community.
