Fairbury’s friendliness impresses visitors to our town every day. Antiques & Uniques’ owner Diane Pawlowski recently had a couple in the store. The gentleman had a faint memory of going from Gilman to Gridley regularly as a child and, if the kids were good, they stopped for an ice-cream cone in Fairbury on the way home.
His recollection was that the Dairy Queen was on the north side of Route 24. He asked whether Dairy Queen used to be on the north side of 24 so Diane checked the Blade archives that are available on-line through the Dominy Memorial Library’s website but she didn’t find any mention of “Dairy Queen” prior to 1975.
Diane suggested that the couple stop in at the deli in Dave’s Supermarket to see if there was anyone old enough hanging out there who might remember the ice cream place on Route 24. They were lucky enough to find one of our local seniors who identified the business that the man was recalling as a Tastee Freez, not a Dairy Queen. The memory of having ice-cream treats in Fairbury was confirmed.
The couple was so excited with what they had learned that they returned to Antiques & Uniques to thank Diane for suggesting that they go to Dave’s deli in search of the answer to their question. They also were carrying a couple bags full of groceries which may not have been purchased had they not been directed to check out the deli as a possible resource for their history question.
The couple then headed off to Lost in Time for lunch and, no doubt, would encounter more of Fairbury’s friendly people there as well. They will leave Fairbury with a very positive impression of what makes Fairbury a great place to live.
“Thanks to Diane and the other friendly folks in our town, we have once again gained some visitors who will most likely come back to visit us! Our friendliness pays off!” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shop group.
“Now, it is the Fairbury Dairy Queen and their friendly staff who continue the “ice cream treat memories” and keep folks coming back! We hear “friendly” comments often, and this makes our small town attractive to folks who stop by!”
