Dale Maley More Than a Historian for Fairbury

This week we would like to dedicate this short column to Dale Maley, a lifetime resident of Fairbury. Many folks may know Mr. Maley as he is a historian and author of various books including several about Fairbury’s history. Over the last several weeks, you may have heard him on the radio – WJEZ’s Community Forum about local history. He has presented well over a dozen times about Fairbury and the history of our town.

Recently, he has spent an enormous amount of time on beautification and history projects for the benefit of our small community.

While, Mr. Maley has attended most of the discussion group meetings hosted by the City of Fairbury, he has been instrumental in helping to form a long-term plan to beautify the town, create more attractions, and overall enhance the betterment for our residents and visitors. He has dedicated hours upon hours of time to the planning process.

One of the projects he is leading is the mural project in Central Park next to the gazebo. As we are writing this article, the sidewalk has been poured, the information stands have been built and placed, and the supports for the murals are built and cemented into the ground. What progress!

By the time you read this article, we would suspect that the murals will be on display. Mr. Maley also created these murals from old photos. Due to the low resolution and poor quality of the photos, many of them had to be recreated in a higher resolution format. He spent many more hours designing the murals so they would put on a great presentation for years to come.

Mr. Maley worked with a local sign company, Aftershock Graphics, to print his designs on aluminum for long-lasting wear. The final exhibit is certainly a great attraction for our town.

If you haven’t already, please stop by and see this newly created display. A dedication is being planned for some time this summer. So, stay tuned!

“A big THANK YOU to Dale Maley, the City employees, and Alderman Terry Zimmerman for their hard work!” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shops group.
