Children & Food – Two Important Aspects of Our Community

When we think about it, a lot of what we do revolves around children and food!  The Halloween holiday is a fun one for children.  Rumor has it that for those who attended community events for the children on Halloween, it wasn’t scary and dark.  It was light-hearted and fun.  Some communities served popcorn, another served hot dogs and chips, but everyone included candy in the mix, of course.  At these community events, the children were in a safe place.

Children are the future of our community.  Allowing them to grow up in a safe and friendly environment is the goal of our local community leaders.  There is another special event benefitting children on Saturday, November 12, 2016 – a Soup Supper at the IOOF from 5pm – 7pm!

The GFWC IL Fairbury Woman’s Club & International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) are partnering this year to benefit all three grade schools in the Prairie Central district – pre-K through 4th grade.  Grants were received from the IOOF, GFWC Literacy Grant, Chenoa Woman’s Club and Fairbury Community Fund to purchase 2,000 books to be distributed three times per year.  The goal is to enhance literacy and allow students to select two books each this school year.  The first distribution will take place in Chenoa on Nov. 14th, then in Fairbury in February, and in Chatsworth in April.

For over 40 years, the Fairbury Woman’s Club has been sponsoring this book distribution, distributing books to the Westview school.  With the schools going to attendance centers, they decided with the help of other organizations and needed donations, they wanted to serve the entire district.  Hence, the Soup Supper at the Odd Fellow Lodge at 122 W. Locust in Fairbury!

The Odd Fellows will be serving potato soup and chili with crackers, ham salad sandwiches, and lemon or chocolate lush for dessert!  The cost is $5 at the door.  Funds raised will be used toward the book distribution throughout the district!

“We are very fortunate to have organizations like the Woman’s Club and the Odd Fellows in our community.  They do so much good, helping us and our children in so many ways.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 12th between 5-7pm.  Go enjoy some hot soup and great fellowship while helping our children improve their literacy & supporting our community!” says Bobbi McKeon owner of Heart’s Desire and coordinator of the Specialty Shops.

“Also, speaking about food…on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11th, the Fairbury Dairy Queen is offering veterans and active duty military a FREE medium Blizzard!” continues Bobbi.  “This is a wonderful gesture to honor those who served our country.  Thank you, Dairy Queen.”
