This week is a big one in the Fairbury-Forrest area! From sales to a festival, there’s bound to be something that will catch your eye and whisk you off on a weekend adventure.
From September 27th to the 29th, Fairbury will be holding it’s All Town Garage Sale sponsored by GFWC Illinois Fairbury Women’s Club. Everything from furniture, electronics, household items and clothes to antiques, collectibles, and toys will be up for sale – it’s just up to you to discover them!
If you’re thinking about attending the All Town Garage Sale, make sure to plan ahead: Start out by picking up a map marking the listed sales at Heart’s Desire, Dave’s, Casey’s, Dairy Queen, Once ‘n Again, or Frugality. You can also find a “treasure” map online at the City of Fairbury website. Once you know where you’re going, put on some clothes that are good for lots of walking, bending, and lifting. Start your “treasure hunting” early in the day if you want to find the best treasures. If you’re bargain hunting, come later on when more items are discounted.
The All Town Garage Sale will be held on Thursday and Friday, September 27th-28th, from 9 am to 6 pm, and on Saturday, September 29th from 9 am to 3 pm. All profits from the map sales will go into fund projects and donations throughout the year. For more information, you can call (815) 692-2686, text (815) 848-2687, or email email@example.com.
Another big sale that’s going on from September 27th-29th is the Friends of the Dominy Library’s Fall Book Sale at the Library! Bestsellers, classic and current novels, children’s books, out-of-print titles as well as magazines, CDs, and DVDs will all be available. The available books cover all genres including recipe books, books on art, biographies, mysteries, romance novels, science fiction novels, and westerns. These secondhand books are sold at very low prices – the library’s staff measures the total height of the books you want to buy and prices them at 50 cents per inch. Magazines only cost a dime, and coffee table books, DVDs, and CDs are priced at $1. Also, up for sale are gardening books, featuring rare and signed copies, and you can search for gifts, keepsakes, and decorations in the holiday section.
The Friends of the Dominy Library sale will be open on Thursday, September 27th, from 9 am to 6 pm; on Friday, September 28th, from 9 am to 6 pm; and on Saturday, September 29th, from 9 am till noon. All proceeds will benefit the library. Items are priced to sell, so come to the Fall Book Sale before all the great deals are gone!
On Saturday, September 29th, Forrest will be holding its 14th Annual Wabash Festival. While the event is centered around the Wabash Railroad, there are activities for all members of the family! From 10 am until 4 pm, there will be a Classic Car & Truck Cruise-In, a DIY photo booth, an antique tractor show, and horse rides. Kids (and adults) can have fun getting their face painted, playing with bubbles, riding the kiddie train, jumping in inflatables, and riding in the race car simulator. If you like history, tour the renovated Forrest Depot, the former Forrest Hotel (now the revitalized Hampshire Hotel), and Jerry’s Hat museum will all be open to visitors.
Food is a big part of the Festival. You can buy breakfast (7:30-10 am) and lunch (11 am-3 pm) at the Trackside Grill. Additionally, the Coffee Steamer and the Cilantro & Lime Food Truck will be on hand. Treat yourself by digging into some Rink‘Corn’Berger Kettle Corn.
You can buy merchandise at several street vendors from 10 am until 4 pm, buy a Wabash Souvenir t-shirt, and enter into a bicycle give-away.
If you have food or paper products, you can donate them to the Forrest Food Pantry Collection Booth that will be on site. Bake sale proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Donations are also greatly appreciated.
Stories, ideas, and suggestions can be submitted to Bobbi McKeon by visiting her at Heart’s Desire or by calling her at (815) 692-4500. You can also email fairbury@fairburyILattractions.com.
