Another Year in Review

Here we are, almost ready to move into a New Year.  With 2016 having quickly flown by, we reflect on what great things have been accomplished over this past year.

Fairbury’s recent Christmas parade, sponsored by the Fairbury Area Chamber of Commerce, was outstanding.  Thanks to the many businesses and organizations that participated and the efforts of the Chamber.  This phenomenal group effort shows what can be done if we work together to make things happen.

Another example of people working together and accomplishing big things is the Specialty Shops group.  This unique group of shops is comprised of twelve local shops that have a goal of making Fairbury a destination spot.  For the last three and a half years, these businesses have combined efforts and skills in working to put Fairbury on the map.  With over 120,000 brochures distributed to welcome centers, attractions, shops, and other spots and areas throughout the State, Fairbury is becoming known as a great place to visit to experience the farm and Small Town USA.

For the past year and a half, the City of Fairbury has hosted brainstorming meetings for all interested citizens to come up with a plan to revitalize our community and bring more people, business, and visitors into town.

Many people have attended these meetings to help develop ideas and strategies.   A lot has been accomplished as evidenced by the list in this column a couple weeks ago.  Some of the obvious include the murals in Central Park, newly painted handrails and bike racks downtown, the restoration of the Occident Flour sign, the framed art pieces in various locations, the lighted signs on the east and west side of town, and much more.

It would be wonderful if even more folks would attend to provide input.  These meetings are very informal and there is a lot of casual discussion.  The City would like to hear from more people.  Everyone is welcome!  As evidenced by the results, these meetings have been successful and will continue into the New Year.  The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at 7pm at the City Hall – lower level.  The winter months will be used to plan for spring projects and continue long range strategizing and implementation.

“We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!  Wishing you all a Happy New Year, too.  As we look to accomplish things in the coming year, please put the 17th of January on your calendar and plan to attend the meeting!” says Bobbi McKeon, owner of Heart’s Desire Antiques & Accents and coordinator of Specialty Shops Group.
