2017 Accomplishments and More

The Fairbury Improvement Group, chaired by Dale Maley, met recently at the new City Hall.  Since we are short of time to write an article this week, we are including Dale’s notes from the meeting.  Wow!  A lot has been accomplished in 2017, thanks to the many volunteers, businesses, and organizations who have been contributing!

  1. Occident Flour Lady sign – a wind blew it off the wall. Was re-mounted with stronger anchor bolts
  2. Mock-up Jail photo op – was removed and placed in old jail for winter storage on Sep 5, 2017
  3. Painting of Sherman Hotel building sign – probably will not get to until Summer of 2018
  4. Replace wood bench in Central Park
  • Garden Club is paying for new steel bench
  • bench was ordered by DC Maley
  • Martin Steidinger agreed to pour a concrete pad, then Maley installs bench
  1. Marsh Park upgrade project

Sub-projects completed

  • new Welcome Sign
  • Restroom upgrade including ADA drinking fountain
  • New Band stand
  • Gazebo including 4 powder-coated steel benches
  • Screened in pavilion including winterizing panels
  • 2 Historical murals on the Marshes and the Stackpoles
  • Storm damage to west shelter repaired
  • 1100 feet of new sidewalk
  • playground equipment painted
  • new swing seats installed
  • new key sets made for City, Martin, and Larry

Sub-projects remaining to be completed

  • 2 park benches for parents to watch children play on order
  • 1 park bench on sidewalk from N. Pavilion to Ash Street on order
  • 8 sidewalks lights for $17,000 – Ordered Aug 15, with 8-10 week delivery (October delivery)
  • 8 concrete pads poured
  • Odd Fellows grant for new equipment, Bill Cox – Next meeting is in October – If $39,000 request is approved, we would see equipment in 2018
  • Video cameras – David Slagel met with video camera supplier on July 18th
    received partial quote from supplier, waiting on full quote – a temporary camera has been installed
    till and seed whole park (in-process)
  • mulched area for all playground equipment
  • excavate, install drainage, matting, wood chips, touch-up paint
  1. Marsh Park Grand Opening Ceremony
  • planning on July 4th, 2018
  • many children’s activities, bands
  • will include a golf cart parade

  • Painting of Swing & Steidinger building advertising sign
  • Mock Fairbury Jail for family photo ops
  • 1st Annual food festival “A LOCAL TASTE: FLAVORS FROM THE FARM”
  • Upgrade of Marsh Park sponsored by Prairie Lands Foundation and City of Fairbury
  • new east and west City Welcome signs by Rotary Club
  • Expanded Christmas program
  • Upgrade bench in Central Park by Garden Club
  • New sidewalk at Locust & 4th by City of Fairbury
  • New windows and tuck-pointing of old City Hall by City of Fairbury
  • 2nd annual advertising in Discover Central Illinois tourist magazine by City of Fairbury
  • 2nd annual History Talkers program during Indian Creek Market days by Echoes Museum
  • (3) WJEZ Pontiac radio segments on Swing & Steidinger, Mock Jail, Marsh Park
  • 1st annual Sprint Mania October 6 weekend by FALS
  • The FairburyIL Attractions facebook page is up to almost 1250 likes and is attracting more likes weekly
  • New area available by Lost Arts for more traveling art displays

  2. Next meeting Tues night Oct 24, 2017 – will meet at new City Hall
