You know what they say\, “one person’s junk is another person’s treasure” and that can be very true\, especially when you have a collaboration of organized residences banding together in one time frame to grab the attention of all you bargain hunters out there. \nSince junk and treasure are in the eyes of the beholder it’s generally understood that the vast majority of items being offered actually have a functional usage value like clothes\, kitchen ware\, tools\, and the like. No matter what the category you can pretty much depend on the fact that you’re probably going to get something you need (or don’t for that matter) for a fraction of its worth. \n Having set the stage with that intro let us introduce you to the Fairbury All Town Garage Sale. This massive registration of individual participants is orchestrated by a superb effort on the part of the General Federation Women’s Club spearheaded by Carol Ely and has been an operational success for many years now. \nThe GFWC has the spring time version of this event in place and it will be opening the starting gate at 9am on Friday\, April 25th and going until 6pm that evening and then continuing on Saturday\, the 26th\, from 9am to 3pm. Printed maps\, identifying the locations of the registered addresses throughout the Fairbury metropolis\, will be available at Dave’s Supermarket\, Once & Again\, Meyer’s Gifts\, Cascade Gardens\, Doc’s\, Hearts Desire\, Casey’s\, and McDonalds Family Restaurant and if you look at one you’ll notice over 50 spots available for visitation and treasure hunting. Join the expedition and get the things that you need or\, the things that you want or\, you can even start collecting for your own garage sale – it’s all going to be out there just waiting for you to come and get it! \n As a further note of interest\, these energetic ladies of the GFWC are putting together another grand collection of opportunities with a Summer Sale scheduled for July 25th and 26th and those dates have the additional draw to the area with the Prairie Dirt Classic racing event at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway. Put this one on your calendar and you can come out and do some “multi-tasking”.

Experiences that are in print\, in audio presentations\, or in video formats that can whisk your mind away into the fictional land of make believe or\, provide insight into a variety of reality topics or educate you on the “how to” for any number of self-propelled projects. \nFrom the minds of qualified experts\, both in real and fictional fields\, come these vast assortments of knowledge and stories that can transport us into a different world or\, raise us to a higher level of educated thinking. That is what a library is and what it does in providing the answers to the various needs of homo sapiens\, aka\, us. \nNow\, it just so happens that Fairbury has an awesome library of its own\, the Dominy Memorial Library\, comfortably situated on the corner of Third Street and Walnut Street (201 south 3rd to be exact)\, and this fine establishment certainly lives up to the expectations that are prompted by the needs of those who seek knowledge and entertainment. Its beginnings were conceived clear back in 1901 when the Dominy family initiated the project and our 21st century version has advanced with the times in keeping up with modern technology. \nIn addition to good ol’ books and such there are eight computers available with high speed internet access and their technical network has expanded to now include WiFi availability – Mr. and Mrs. Dominy would be absolutely awed! \nThis community serving\, well run informational treasure trove\, is a non-profit service and it depends on the patrons and supporters of its user-friendly atmosphere to maintain its operational abilities. One of the ways that this is accomplished is through periodic book sales and guess what\, there’s one coming up! A very gracious and talented group of supporters\, known in the local folk lore as the Friends of Dominy Library\, co-chaired by Mary Morris and Shirley Meenen\, have once again collected a vast assortment of literary talent. This collection contains something for everyone in book form as well as DVDs and VHS tapes that offer presentations in current and not so current fiction\, children’s books\, religious topics\, biographies\, cook books\, coffee table books\, gardening\, and magazines. \nNo matter what your interests are you will most likely find it in this bi-annual presentation so\, come on in and take a gander and see if there’s something there that might tickle your mind. The hours of operation are\, Thursday\, April 24th\, 9am to 6pm\, Friday the 25th\, 9am to 5pm\, and Saturday the 26th\, 9am to 12noon – don’t be shy\, go ahead and stop by\, and help make a difference because every item they sell adds success to the library’s future. See you there with the Super Heroes and Dr. Seuss who might just be getting hints from Heloise or sage advice from Mark Twain.
