For you readers, we have assembled the Fairbury Community’s “Events of Interest” so you can check into the things that you and yours would be interested in participating in. Here it is in date order and more events may come up along the way:

May 1st & 2nd:

On Friday and Saturday, Cascade Gardens is having their openhouse!  A great time to get your plants for the season!  Click here for more information.

On Saturday (May 2nd), the Fairbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 64th Annual Fairbury Community Sale.  This event is one of the biggest events of the year!  Learn more!

May 8th & 9th – Once ‘n Again is continuing their customer interest events with A Sale to Honor Mothers – well, you know what that’s about, MOTHER’S DAY! Once ‘n Again has a whole lot of things that can fill the bill for Mom from personal accessories to household items and the bargains are traditional with a visit here with their special ways to save.  Once ‘n Again – 118 West Locust Street (Main Street) – 815-692-4194

May 9th – Dave’s Supermarket Cooking Class – here is a “how to” with the Big Green Egg grill plus, a meal featuring three different kinds of meats (as grilled in the class) along with side dish accompaniments and a drink, all for just $15. Come on up and learn the secrets of the Big Green Egg grilling techniques and get yourself a nice lunch to go with it. This event goes from 11:00am to 1:00pm on that Saturday and the Dave’s Crew will show you why this particular grill is a great piece of cooking equipment to have – tis the season and, this will give anyone a good start to a great summer of outdoor cooking along with the techniques of how to get the most out of it.. Of course, while you’re there, grab yourself a cart full of groceries – this Supermarket always lives up to the definition of Super.

May 9th – Fairbury Speedway – Big Race for this Saturday’s schedule – it’s the American Late Model Series (ALMS) Fan Frenzy evening feature race with a $10,000 first place prize on the line. You know all the contenders will be there and ready to make it happen so prepare yourself for a heightened level of excitement. It’s a full night of racing and all the other classes will be going head to head in their normal racing environment so pack everyone up and head on out to the race track on Fairbury’s Fair Grounds – plenty of room, food, and drink for everyone and it’s dirt track racing at it’s finest.

May 10th – McDonald’s Family Restaurant – got a huge Mother’s Day Buffet for that special Mom that is bound to please and appease. Bring Mom and the Family up for a lunch or dinner that has it all and you can pick and choose all the plate busters you like (the regular menu is also available) – what a great way to show the Special Lady some real appreciation in a dining facility that gives you their best in all that they do. The Restaurant is newly redone and its comfortable, compatible, friendly and efficient so let them take care of you on this special day.

May 12th – Doc’s Pharmacy – here is another of the ongoing sequence of “Doc’s Cares” special presentations. Pharmacist Julie will be giving another of her well prepared and informative presentations and this one will cover Cholesterol, something we’re all involved with and you can learn the significance that it plays in your life as well as the do’s and don’ts when it comes to taking care of it. This discourse is open to the public so bring your listening ear and questions and get informed. Julie starts her presentation at 2pm and it usually runs for about a half hour – she’s good and she’s well informed so, do yourself a favor, and let her pass the informed part onto you – you might be surprised at what you can learn and subsequently do to make life better.

May 20th – China Kitchen – here comes the “Mystery Buffet Item” – this is a dining additive that the China Kitchen has been preparing on a monthly basis. Ziu-Ying Zheng (aka Wilson) is a superb Chinese Chef and his oriental cuisine preparations have a long standing reputation with all those that have experienced them. He has been using that cooking mastery to do a monthly special preparation that remains a mystery until it is presented with the rest of their fine buffet items on the designated day of each month. This is the day for May – give them a try for lunch or dinner and see what the dining mystery theater has in store for this one. You’ll be glad you did.

May 23rd – Slagel Family Farm – here come’s another of their famous Chicago Chef Dinner Events – these dinners include a farm tour, a meat cutting demo, and a very well planned and prepared four course meal that comes from products raised and grown literally just feet from where you’re sitting. This Dinner and Tour features Chef Erling Wu-Bower from the Chicago Restaurant “Nico Osteria” and Chef Brian Huston of “Boltwood Evanston” – these are professionals who run restaurant kitchens in one of the largest cities in the country and they know what they’re doing. Monday, May 25th – Memorial Day – Red, White & Blue Day at McDonalds Family Restaurant – the restaurant will be open from 5:30am to 11:00am for your dining pleasure and, if your clothing ensemble has red, white and blue in it you can pop a balloon and get the discount coupon inside that can be redeemed on your next visit. (See our individual write-up).

May 25th – Once ‘n Again – Traci Hassett brings you her second installment of special customer benefits for the month of May with a big Memorial Day Sale. Once ‘n Again is your place for values on second time around merchandise from clothing to furniture to personal accessories and so much more. All has passed the in depth scrutiny of the resale detail and you can find top of the line representations in all categories so come on up and see what the store has going for this special day and see why so many have endorsed the quality and availability of the Once ‘n Again repertoire. May 30th – Fairbury Speedway – this is another “special mention” weekly event for the month and it’s Fan Appreciation Night. Admission to the stands is only $5, there’s a racers reunion and vintage display with a nostalgia theme so there is plenty to see. Special events feature the “Rusty Allen Kids Dash for Cash” and the Alkota “Keep it Clean” Series Race along with a standard full night of racing in all classes. Saturday, May 30th – IOOF’s Sandbox Day – Fairbury’s IOOF Chapter can take care of your need for sand, should you have one – they will deliver sand on this Saturday, from 8am to 5pm, anywhere within a three mile radius of Fairbury – you can call Arnold Ifft at 815-692-2708 or, on his cell at 815-848-2806 for details. Get you sandbox filled – give him a shout.
